About Sahumitos

"Sahumitos" refers to small bundles or preparations of dried herbs that are lit and allowed to smolder, producing fragrant smoke. These bundles are often used in rituals, ceremonies, or personal practices to cleanse the energy of a space, ward off negative influences, and invite positive energies.

The ingredients used in sahumitos can vary, but they often include dried herbs such as sage, cedar, lavender, rosemary, and other aromatic plants. Each herb is believed to have its own specific properties and energies. For example, white sage is commonly used for purification and clearing negative energy, while cedar is associated with protection and grounding.

To perform a sahumito ceremony, one would light the bundle of herbs, let it catch fire, and then blow out the flames, allowing the herbs to smolder and produce smoke. The smoke is then wafted around a space, over objects, or around a person's body to cleanse and purify.

Sagrada Madre

Sagrada Madre means ‘Holy Mother’, Pancha Mama, and this name reflects how they treat the Earth’s resources.

Besides coal, as a combustion agent, they use a scentless fruit-based biomass. Each year over 100 tons of fruit biomass is discarded from industrial processing such as juice making. Rather than letting these materials go to waste, Sagrada Madre effectively reuses them in their incense.

Warnings – instructions for use

Provide a fireproof bowl or abalone shell and a bag of sand. Light the end of the bundle and blow it for a while so that the flame goes out and the bundle continues to smoulder.

If the sahumito is firmly bundled, blow extra to keep the herbs smouldering well. With this smouldering bundle, perform the smudging ceremony or session. Make sure the fireproof bowl is kept under the sahumito bundle at all times.

After the end of the session or ceremony, you can extinguish the bundle again in a bowl of sand (check carefully that it has actually gone out) and keep the bundle for another use.
