Selenite, the stone with the Angel's vibrations, is becoming increasingly rare. Our great Moroccan Selenite products are very beautiful and are being valued by many. Still, our Selenite is not expensive, certainly not in comparison with its quality.
The name Selenite is given to larger, transparent gypsum crystals (CaSO4 · 2 H2O). Selenite is (amongst others) built up by oxidation of calcific clay-deposits. Inside these deposits, iron pyrites are present. By way of an eroding process (oxidizing), sulphate ions are released (SO42-). Because of the oxidation process, the clay will acidified, causing the limestone to dissolve (limestone will dissolve in acid fluids). This causes Ca2+ ions to be released, which will then react with the sulphates into gypsum.
Selenite is sometimes confused with Rock-crystal (SiO2), because their external features are very much alike. However, they are easily distinguished, because the Selenite surface could be scratched easily, while Rock-crystal cannot, because it is much harder. The name Selenite is derived from Selene, the Greek Moon-goddess.
